The 12 Ideas Rewriting PR Right Now
A highlight reel of frameworks, tools, and playbooks for visibility in the AI era.
Hi, Team PR@ctical,
This week we are closing a chapter: 90 days of modern PR.
Over the past three months, I have been building what I believe is the new operating system for communications in the AI era.
✨ From digital trust to infrastructure to technical frameworks
🧠 From pitching volume to machine-trainable visibility
For those of you who have been following from the start, this is your highlight reel. For those just joining, consider this a master class crash course in the evolution of modern PR.
90 Days of Modern PR: The Highlight Reel
Foundation
1. The T.R.U.S.T.™ Layer
PR today starts with credibility signals. The T.R.U.S.T.™ framework is a checklist that makes content visible to both humans and AI systems:
Topical Authority: stake a clear claim in a niche
Relevance: use formats AI can read (Q&A, schema, clear definitions)
Useful Proof: include evidence, data, or case studies
Search Equity: ensure it surfaces in Google and AI search tools
Timely Reinforcement: keep content fresh and updated
2. Frustrated With PR Results?
Many teams send 50 to 100 pitches to secure one placement. The problem is not the team. The problem is the old playbook that values “volume” over visibility.
Modern PR shifts effort toward content and signals that AI systems actually learn from, so the payoff goes further than a single headline.
3. Traditional vs. Modern PR
Traditional PR: awareness through volume. Lots of pitches, metrics tied to vanity impressions, short-term mentions.
Modern PR: visibility through credibility and discoverability. Earned coverage matters, but content must also be structured so it appears in AI search summaries and analyst reports.
Infrastructure
4. Conversational PR
Press releases and bylines written for clever headlines no longer work.
AI systems parse questions and definitions, not slogans. Conversational PR means shaping messaging so it directly answers the questions people type into ChatGPT, Perplexity, or Google AI Overviews.
5. Dual Pathway PR
Executives still expect clips and impressions, but AI-ready PR is becoming non-negotiable. The answer is a dual pathway: keep traditional PR for credibility and sales enablement, but add machine-trainable formats (schema, structured press releases, proxy brand audits) so you show up in AI results too.
6. Google Zero Strategy
Google is moving toward “zero-click” answers where users never leave the page. That means press releases and blogs cannot rely on SEO alone. They must be built as answers, not just web pages, so they still surface in summaries even when clicks vanish.
7. The New Trusted Source Mix
AI models rely on certain sources more than others. To be visible, your brand must show up in these places:
Structured wire releases with schema
Analyst reports and briefings
Community forums like Reddit and Quora
Trade and industry media
Owned content designed for AI comprehension (FAQs, glossaries, structured blogs)
Technical Frameworks
8. Answer Engine Optimization (AEO)
SEO is not enough. AEO means structuring content so it surfaces in generative AI answers. That requires:
Writing in natural question form
Using schema and FAQs
Defining your executives and products as entities
Providing useful proof like case studies or analyst citations
The new KPI: share of answer — how often your brand appears in AI outputs compared to competitors.
9. Entity-First Communications
AI models build knowledge graphs that connect entities (people, brands, products). If you do not define your own brand, the machine will. That means every press release, byline, and executive bio must serve as a definitional anchor with structured metadata, backlinks, and consistency across channels.
10. Press Releases in the AI Era
A modern release must serve two audiences: journalists and AI systems. That means natural language headlines, clear FAQs, JSON-LD schema, and visible trust signals like compliance, clients, or analyst mentions. A press release is no longer just news—it is training data.
11. Schema for PR Pros
Schema markup is how AI systems interpret content. The priority types for PR are:
Article (blogs, bylines)
NewsArticle (press releases, announcements)
FAQPage (Q&A explainers)
Person (executive bios)
Organization (company profiles)
Without schema, your content is invisible to the systems shaping reputation.
12. Proxy Brand Input Matrix
Your brand is already being trained into AI from outdated bios, old releases, or competitor descriptions. The Proxy Brand Input Matrix is a tool to control what AI learns. It audits inputs across narrative, products, executives, and key topics so you can remove old signals and reinforce the right ones.
The Through-Line
Foundation: earn trust and define authority
Infrastructure: rebuild distribution and credibility
Technical: optimize for humans and machines
The future of PR is not vanity metrics or outdated pitching cadences. It is visibility that humans and machines can trust.
Trending Industry Shift: AI Skills Are Now Table Stakes
While newsrooms are shrinking, communications professionals who are thriving are the ones upskilling.
Programs like PRSA’s “AI in Action” and Upgrade AI’s certificate are running this fall. They teach:
AI-powered research and data mining
Workflow automation and custom assistants
Ethical guardrails
Portfolio-ready projects for real client impact
Why it matters: these certifications are becoming the new baseline for credibility with clients and executives. They are no longer optional.
The past 90 days showed us how fast the rules of PR are being rewritten. The next 90 will be about who levels up fastest.
Stay sharp, stay visible,
Sarah
