The New Half-Life of PR: Freshness vs. Authority.
Hi, Team pr@ctical.
This week we’re confronting a blind spot that’s killing most brand visibility (and that I want to make sure you learn so you can get ahead of the curve).
I have a painful POV that regardless of how our indstury feels about it is happening right now, based on what we know to be true today:
and here’s why…
✨ Authority has a half-life.
This isn’t new. Would you read a newspaper from 3 months ago?
neither would AI.
Your best-performing blog, press release, or byline ages fast, and unless it’s refreshed, structured, and referenced as part of your brand 28 day news cycle, AI treats it like old news.
Polished PR is dead. Conversational PR is what AI actually reads.
This means after your content goes live, you now need a plan to keep fresh (or refreshed) and relevant. “Old” PR would have at a minimum looked for amplification opportunities, now we need a new layer that includes a “fresh factor.”
Amplification alone doesn’t stop authority decay. AI models continuously re-crawl and re-rank, and Google’s own documentation now cites recency and regular updates as quality signals【Search Engine Land, Aug 2025】. A fresh factor looks like:
Planned refresh cycles (28–60 days) to update language, add new FAQs, and re-contextualize the piece.
Structured updates—using schema, conversational formats, and internal linking so AI sees the changes.
Authority reinforcement—adding new backlinks, trades, or references that extend the shelf life.
Without a freshness plan, even your biggest win fade.
THE FRESHNESS FACTOR
AI doesn’t care how glossy or “award-worthy” your coverage looks. It cares whether it’s current, structured, and connected.
Google’s August 2025 Spam Update targeted stale, thin AI content and elevated recent, relevant material【Search Engine Land, 2025】.
Ahrefs data shows pages updated within 90 days generate nearly 2x more traffic than older pages【Ahrefs Content Decay Study, 2025】.
Stanford HAI confirmed that conversational formats—FAQs, Q&As, and even Reddit threads—are disproportionately cited in AI responses【Stanford HAI, 2024】.
The takeaway: freshness multiplies authority. Polished placements without updates are invisible.
THE NEW COMMS HIERARCHY
To win visibility in 2025, your strategy has to combine both:
1. FRESHNESS
update your most authoritative pages every 28–60 days with schema, FAQs, and conversational content.
2. AUTHORITY
anchor every announcement back to your top 3–5 pillar pages. stop scattering wins across low-authority blogs or static newsrooms.
3. REINFORCEMENT
extend signals with backlinks, trades, and social proof. reddit-style conversations and listicles beat polished PDFs every time.
HOW TO KNOW WHICH PAGES MATTER
If you don’t know your authority anchors, find them out today. Either ask your IT team or run a simple ahrefs exercise:
open site explorer → enter your domain.
click Top Pages → see which 5 pages drive the most traffic/keywords/backlinks.
check their last update → if 60+ days old, they’re decaying.
refresh on a 28–60 day cycle → new schema, conversational content, backlinks.
These are the pages AI is most likely to read first. If they’re stale, everything else suffers.
WHY THIS MATTERS
The old metric: “did we place the story?”
The new test: “did the story refresh authority and extend freshness?”
Content without updates is like a billboard that never changes. people—and machines—stop noticing.
AI favors the newest, best-structured answers. if you aren’t refreshing at the speed of the news cycle, you’re training the machines to ignore you.
Stay fresh, stay authoritative,
Sarah

Hi - I love your posts. I understand how freshness and authority relate to magazine brands, blogs, and even brands that have faq pages etc. but can you extrapolate on how this is relevant to publicists who are mostly pitching via email?
